What is FIR

FIR, which is also know as First information Report to the Police or Cops. FIR is India wise report which Police accept across all the states of India. Whenever some incident happens, FIR is the way of communication to inform police about the incident happened with you or someone. Now days all the states in India is moving towards have FIR system online so that citizen of India can get it register from anywhere and anytime. But since all state not have been upgraded their system so far so it may be manual system to lodge FIR depending on which state of India you are in.

What should you mention in the FIR?

You should mention all the details related to the incident, which help police to investigate your case more in details. This can be divided into three Sections.

Section 1: Information related to the person who is lodging the FIR, Address and contact Details.

Section 2: This section contains all the details related to incident like what time incident happened, how incident happened, who is the eye witness, Details related to the loss or damage etc.

Section 3: This section contains details related to against whom you wanted to lodge FIR for. This may be directly tied to individuals or company, trust, or may be un-known persons.

FIR Categories

Below are the mainly three type of categories of FIR with Police

FIR Against Any incident

This category contains information related to any specific incident like Theft, Robbery, Murder, Fraud etc. to name a few. In this category you must mention all the details related to incident, against whom you are lodging FIR, what all damage it did with you or your property etc. Based on this first information with Police, Police starts investigation of the case. This is very Crucial information for further process related to your case with the Police against any individual or company etc.

FIR for lost Article

This category Contains the information related to the Lost items which may be some documents, items, or any other type of information you wanted to lodge with state police so that no individual can miss use your document or identify. Even if they use it somewhere you will not be responsible. This ensure only after when you lodge the FIR for your relevant items with Police.

Theft FIR

In this type of FIR category where you don’t know about incident details much. It was related to Theft, where you may know the actual time of the incident or may not be. Here you specify the details of your theft items like bike, car, theft at home etc. and police lodge this information against un-known person. Based on the fact given in the FIR police starts investigating your case, so ensure to give all true information.

Why is FIR important?

A FIR is a very important document as it sets the process of criminal justice in motion. It is only after the FIR is registered in the police station that the police take up investigation of the case.

Cognizable Offence

A cognizable offence is one in which the police may arrest a person without warrant. They are authorized to start investigation into a cognizable case on their own and do not require any orders from the court to do so.

Non-cognizable Offence

A non-cognizable offence is an offence in which a police officer has no authority to arrest without warrant. The police cannot investigate such an offence without the court’s permission.
